Hilde Kahn, married Würzburger

Hilda Karoline, known as Hilde Kahn, was born in Bischofsheim on November 15, 1920 as the eldest daughter of Berthold and Selma Kahn. She grew up with her two younger sisters, Inge and Rose, at Spelzengasse 47, the family home of her father, who ran the family's inherited butcher's shop.

Hilde first attended elementary school in Bischofsheim and then moved to Mainz to attend a girls' secondary school. She later attended the Jewish district school, also in Mainz. In 1937, the family was forced to sell their house and business at Spelzengasse 47. They first moved to Mainz to Schulstraße, and from October 30, 1937 to Adam-Karrillon-Straße 52.

In December 1938, the family fled to Souleuvre in Luxembourg, where Berthold Kahn had had the foresight to buy a house at Rue d'Esch 21. Hilde was only granted a transit visa for Luxembourg. She decided to go to England on an au pair program for young Jewish people. There she met Sallo Würzburger, who had been born in Künzelsau in 1914. They married in 1943 in Great Britain, where their son Eric Richard was born in 1947.

The young family emigrated from Southampton on the HMS Queen Mary to New York in 1948 and moved to Carlisle/New York in 1950. Their son Marc was born there in 1952.

She initially worked in a beauty salon after the death of her husband Sallo in 1965, for whom a stumbling block was laid in his hometown of Künzelsau in 2015. She soon moved to Florida, where she worked as an accountant in Miami-Dade County.

Together with her sister Ilse Sharlet, she visited her home town of Bischofsheim in 1991 at the invitation of the community.

Hilde Würzburger passed away on July 29, 2013 in Pembroke Pines Florida/USA at the age of 92. She is buried at Beth Israel in Rotterdam, Schenectady, New York/USA.
